In our Nuu-chah-nulth worldview the natural world is a mirror of the spiritual realm. All of our actions are simultaneously inhabiting these two spaces. Our traditional songs, dances and ceremonies are designed to bring our physical selves back into better spiritual alignment. As I have been studying our masks and regalia, I am the most fascinated by the repeating elements of transformation. Often our stories express the belief that beings have the abilityto go through experiences that shift them into new forms. When I became a mother, I felt a shift deeper inside me than ever before and when I gave birth, I bloomed.
The nootka rose runs wild on the northwest coast and has soft pink flowers that release a sweet intoxicating aroma through the forest.
