Whales are known for singing long and complex vibrational messages out through the depths of the ocean. They will even gather in an area and sing together with songs slowly evolving over time. As a whaling people, our sacred and deep relationship with whales is often misunderstood. Our communities also have sacred songs that are shared at specific times and passed down through lineages.

"Following the Sacred Heartbeats" was originally commissioned for the Pacific Rim Whale Festival and honours the sacred relationship Nuu-chah-nulth people have with the local whales we used to hunt. A young two-spirited community member holds the drum, bringing the community back into balance.

In my community we have sacred songs that are shared at specific times and passed down through lineages. Whales also will sing long and complex vibrational messages out through the depths of the ocean. All the whales in an area will sing virtually the same song at any point in time and the song is constantly and slowly evolving over time. This is one part of the relationship I see we have with the whales we used to hunt. A young two-spirited community member is holding the drum, bringing the community back together in the return of our sacred ways of being

Following the Sacred Heartbeats is a part of a series of woodblock prints exploring my people's natural and supernatural relationship with whales.
